If your fiberglass shower pan is stained, chalky, cracked, or just plain ugly, you may be assuming a full replacement is your only option. It's not. Fiberglass shower pans can absolutely be reglazed, and for most homeowners, it's a faster, far less invasive, and far less expensive fix than tearing out and replacing the whole unit.
Common Fiberglass Shower Pan Problems Reglazing Can Fix
Fiberglass is a great, affordable material, but over years of use it tends to develop a few predictable issues:
A chalky, dull, or faded surface from years of cleaning products breaking down the gel coat
Hairline cracks or spider cracks, especially near the drain or where the pan flexes underfoot
Rust stains or discoloration around the drain
A rough or slippery texture as the original finish wears away
Small chips or gouges from dropped items or years of wear
If your pan is structurally sound, meaning there's no soft spot, major flex, or water damage to the subfloor beneath it, reglazing is usually a great fit.
How Fiberglass Shower Pan Reglazing Works
Inspection and prep. We check the pan for structural issues, then thoroughly clean and degrease the surface to remove soap scum, oils, and residue that would keep the new coating from bonding.
Repair. Cracks, chips, and rough spots are filled and smoothed so the new coating has a clean, even surface to work with.
Surface preparation. The existing gel coat is sanded to create the right texture for the new coating to grip.
Primer and topcoat application. A bonding primer goes on first, followed by multiple coats of a durable refinishing material, the same category of coating we use for tub and tile reglazing, built to handle constant water exposure and foot traffic.
Cure time. Like a reglazed tub, a freshly coated shower pan needs time to cure fully before use, typically at least 24 hours.
The result is a smooth, slip-resistant, like-new surface, with cracks, stains, or dullness gone.
Reglazing vs. Replacing a Fiberglass Shower Pan
If your shower pan has a soft spot, is leaking into the subfloor, or has a major structural crack, replacement may be the right call, and a good contractor will tell you that honestly rather than reglazing over a problem that needs more than a cosmetic fix. But for the vast majority of worn, stained, or lightly cracked fiberglass pans, reglazing solves the problem without the mess or cost of a renovation.
How Long Does a Reglazed Fiberglass Pan Last?
With proper care, mild, non-abrasive cleaners, and by avoiding harsh chemicals, a reglazed fiberglass shower pan can look great for many years, similar to a reglazed bathtub. It's also a good chance to change the color while you're at it, if the rest of your shower could use a refresh.
